Ruth McKee

Oil painting by American artist Ruth McKee (1929-2012). A native of Philadelphia, McKee is renowned for her romantic and abstract depictions of women in soft landscapes. Her work often portrays the female form, spirit, and nature through imagined subjects. "Life is so short and we're all so fragile," McKee remarked about the human condition. McKee's art showcases fragility through gentle atmosphere, expert use of light, and expressive subjects within their surroundings. The elements combine to produce a distinctive effect attributable to Ruth McKee. Primarily working in oil on canvas, McKee has also used acrylics, tiles, porcelain, and other mediums, and continues to explore the concept of life's purpose through art. Ruth McKee, the first female recipient of a 4-year senatorial scholarship to Philadelphia College of Art, quickly gained recognition. In 1967, she was named Pennsylvania's "Female Artist of the Year" and became the first female solo exhibitor at the Philadelphia Sketch Club. By the 1980s, her work was sought after by top collectors.
